Small Actions, Big Impact: Cleaning Up Down Beach for a Greener Future

Volunteers in green shirts clean trash from down beach, Limbe. Holding garbage bags, they work under a blue sky with scattered clouds.

On March 29, 2024, For Earth’s Sake (FES) partnered with the Limbe Wildlife Centre (LWC) for a transformative beach cleanup at Down Beach, Limbe. With over 174 schoolchildren—from LWC's Conservation Education Outreach Programme—volunteers, and conservationists, we took action against marine pollution, reinforcing our commitment to environmental sustainability.

Why This Matters

Marine pollution is a major challenge in Cameroon, with waste—especially plastic—littering beaches and harming marine life. The ocean often becomes a dumping ground, with waves washing trash ashore only for the tides to pull it back in. Our cleanup targeted this cycle, focusing on waste washed up on the shore, litter left by beachgoers, and trash improperly discarded by nearby households.

Small Actions, Big Impact

FES Volunteers and LWC team pose with the children wearing colorful shirts with wildlife slogans pose on a beach. The sea is visible in the background.

Together, we removed 221.82 kg of waste, making the beach safer for both people and wildlife. More importantly, it was truly inspiring to see young Cameroonians take action for a cleaner, greener future! This initiative was more than just a cleanup—it was a movement to instill lasting environmental consciousness in these young minds who are the future stewards of the planet.

Stronger Together

Cleaning up Down Beach was spearheaded by the Limbe Wildlife Centre (LWC) as part of their ongoing commitment to conservation and environmental education. Through their Conservation Education Outreach Programme, LWC empowers young Cameroonians to take action in protecting nature. For Earth’s Sake (FES) was proud to join this initiative, alongside dedicated partners like Go Ape Foundation and Jeanne D'Arc Foundation (JAF). Protecting the planet starts with local actions like these, proving that when we work together, we can drive meaningful change—creating cleaner beaches, healthier ecosystems, and a more environmentally conscious community. While this cleanup was a success, the fight against marine pollution continues.
